Mark Kohler, of North Haven, will take office July 11 and serve until January, when the next secretary of the state will be sworn in following the November election.
Merrill, 민주당 원, announced this week that she will resign at noon Thursday to spend more time with her husband, Stephen Leach, 78, who has been living with Parkinson’s disease for years and has been dealing with recent health setbacks. Merrill served as the state’s top elections official since 2011.

Lamont, 민주당 원, said in a statement that he was appointing Kohler because of his leadership experience in the attorney general’s office and knowledge of election laws. Kohler said he was honored and humbled by the appointment.
