President Joe Biden is holding his first formal news conference on Thursday and will likely face scrutiny over his administration’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic, the growing number of unaccompanied migrant children crossing the border en gun control, among many other pressing issues.
The news conference comes more than two months into Biden’s presidency, which is behind many of his predecessors. Fifteen of Biden’s predecessors held a solo news conference within 33 days of taking office, according to a CNN analysis of the past 100 jare. Biden is set to formally take questions after signing his first major legislative achievement, a $ 1.9 trillion Covid-19 relief package, into law. The legislation has funds allocated to help schools reopen safely, for the national vaccination effort and direct economic relief for Americans.
The briefing also comes as the nation reels from mass shootings in Colorado and Georgia that together killed 18 people in less than a week. Biden has pushed the Senate to pass a pair of House-approved gun control laws expanding background checks and an assault weapon ban. The measures don’t currently have enough support to pass — and the White House hasn’t ruled out taking executive action.

Covid-19

The Biden administration is scrambling to find adequate housing for the rising number of unaccompanied minors arriving at the US-Mexico border. Biden has said that he will travel to the border at some point, and senior administration officials and lawmakers have already made the trip down to see facilities housing the migrants.

The filibuster
